Dell just announced the largest tech acquisition ever

You might not have heard of EMC , but it’s a technology behemoth that runs many of the services you use today.

The company provides datacenter storage for large technology companies — and today, it’s been acquired by Dell.

It’s the largest technology acquisition ever, coming in at $67 billion and eclipsing the next-largest in which Avago  acquired chipset maker Broadcom  for $37 billion in May 2015.

The offer put to EMC by Dell is $33.15 per share, with the remainder in securities equating to the value of EMC-controlled VMware, which will remain a listed company.

The deal will benefit Dell by helping to raise its profile in data centers, as EMC holds nearly twice the shares Dell has in the storage market. It also now makes Dell one of the largest providers of enterprise computing products and services.

While it’s a successful result for Dell, it seems to be a move in the opposite direction of its counterparts, Hewlett Packard, which has chosen to break up its business rather than make it larger.

Volkswagen scandal: 11 million cars to be recalled in January

New Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller

Volkswagen is set to recall all vehicles associated with the emissions rigging debacle. The diesel cars at the heart of a global scandal will be fixed by the end of 2016, according to VW's new CEO Matthias Mueller. The company has set aside £4.8m to cover the costs of the recall.

"If everything goes as planned, we can start the recall in January," Mueller, who was appointed CEO at the height of the scandal, told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "All the cars should be in order by the end of 2016."

Up to 11 million vehicles around the world are said to be rigged with emissions cheating software -- 8 million of which are in Europe. As many as 1.18 million vehicles in the UK are said to be affected. They include:

393,450 Audis
76,773 Seats
131,569 Skodas
508,276 Volkswagen cars
79,838 Volkswagen commercial vehicles

The fault lies in the EA 189 diesel engine, various transmissions and some country-specific designs. In most cases a software update will fix vehicles. But some will need new injectors and catalysers, according to Mueller. Volkswagen is likely to set up a temporary workshop dedicated to fixing the faults.

Mueller said only a few developers knew about the manipulated cars and that top management was unaware. Four employees, including three senior managers responsible for engine development, have already been suspended. Other have already retired, according to Mueller. "Massive cuts" would be needed to make up for the losses, he added.

Volkswagen made a "serious mistake," said Mueller. "We must answer for that [...] But bear in mind that there were no dead with us; our cars were and are safe."

Fines are yet to be levied against the company -- the maximum fine in the US alone could be as high as £11.7bn. Volkswagen should be able to raise about £30bn before having to sell assets, Reuters reported.

Facebook and EU satellite operator team up to deliver broadband to Africa

According to EutelSat, satellite networks are well suited to connecting people in low-to medium-density population areas. [Eutelsat]

European satellite operator Eutelsat Communications and social media giant Facebook said today (5 October) they are working jointly to deliver satellite broadband Internet to connectivity-hungry sub-Saharan Africa.

The firms revealed they have reached a multi-year agreement with satellite communication firm Spacecom to use the entire broadband payload of the AMOS-6 satellite due to come on stream in the second half of next year and provide coverage for large swathes of sub-Saharan Africa, after identifying "pent-up demand for connectivity".

Eutelsat said in a statement the project would offer access "using affordable, off-the-shelf" hardware, sharing capacity with Facebook in regions often lacking access to reliable fixed and mobile terrestrial networks.

"Satellite networks are well suited to economically connecting people in low- to medium-density population areas," Eutelsat added.

The capacity will enable Eutelsat to step up its broadband activity in sub-Saharan Africa that was initiated using Ku-band satellites to serve professional users.

Eutelsat is establishing a new company based in London that will steer its African broadband vision and business. The company will be led by Laurent Grimaldi, founder and former CEO of Tiscali International Network, and will focus on serving premium consumer and professional segments.

Facebook two years ago launched Internet.org, an initiative to accelerate connectivity in poorly covered regions and unveiled plans to work with partners in Africa to improve both satellite and terrestrial capacity for rural areas.

"Facebook's mission is to connect the world, and we believe that satellites will play an important role in addressing the significant barriers that exist in connecting the people of Africa," Chris Daniels, Internet.org vice president, said in a statement.

"We are looking forward to partnering with Eutelsat on this project," Daniels added.

Eutelsat chairman and CEO Michel de Rosen said: "We are excited by this opportunity to accelerate the deployment of our broadband strategy and to partner with Facebook on a new initiative to provide Internet access services in Africa.

"Eutelsat's strong track record in operating High Throughput Satellite systems will ensure that we can deliver accessible and robust Internet solutions that get more users online and part of the Information Society."

More Than 15 Million T-Mobile Customers Affected by Experian Breach

20150806-t-mobile-sign
Global information services group Experian announced Thursday that one of its business units had been hacked. The breach occurred on a server that contained data on behalf of one of its clients, T-Mobile.
The data includes personal information for a combination of about 15 million customers and applicants in the U.S. who at one point may have applied for T-Mobile service. The company said that the incident did not impact its own consumer credit database.
The data also included applicants requiring a credit check for service or device financing from Sept. 1, 2013 through Sept. 16, 2015, Experian North America said in a statement.
The ADRs of Ireland-headquartered Experian closed Thursday up nearly 1.7 percent to $16.38, while shares of T-Mobile were down more than 1 percent in extended trading.
In a letter to consumers, T-Mobile CEO John Legere said the following:
"Obviously I am incredibly angry about this data breach and we will institute a thorough review of our relationship with Experian, but right now my top concern and first focus is assisting any and all consumers affected. I take our customer and prospective customer privacy VERY seriously. This is no small issue for us. I do want to assure our customers that neither T-Mobile's systems nor network were part of this intrusion and this did not involve any payment card numbers or bank account information."
Legere also said that any customers concerned that they may have been impacted can sign up for two years of free credit monitoring and identity resolution services at Experian's "Protect My ID" program.
Experian said it took immediate action upon finding the breach: it secured the server, initiated a comprehensive investigation and notified U.S. and international law enforcement.
The data stolen included names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security numbers. No payment card or banking information was acquired, the company said.
"We take privacy very seriously and we understand that this news is both stressful and frustrating. We sincerely apologize for the concern and stress that this event may cause," said Craig Boundy, CEO of Experian North America. "That is why we're taking steps to provide protection and support to those affected by this incident and will continue to coordinate with law enforcement during its investigation."

E N M I O P I N I O N: Respira tranquilo y no tengas miedo
